An Overview of the XF 56mm
This is something new and a little complex. In short, there are two versions: this version of the lens is basically optimised for shooting at f1.2. So, if you want low light over sharpness at f1.2, you want the normal lens. If you want sharpness over low light performance, you want this lens. On the lens you will note two fstop marks one in orange and one in white which are to show the different equivalent f-stops with or without the APD filter.
This lens is pretty much an f1.7 but a hyper sharp version of the ‘R’ lens. ‘The FUJINON LENS XF56mm F1.2 R APD offers brilliant levels of sharpness even when shooting with the aperture at F1.2. In addition, the apodisation filter smoothes the bokeh’s outlines. This combination of image sharpness and beautiful bokeh delivers portraits with a threedimensional feel’.
Autofocusing for a lens with an apodization filter – In the past, an apodization filter has only been used on a manual focus lens, this is the first to use high-precision contrast AF.

If you can find the extra money and want to push this lens, you will not waste your money going for the XF 56mm APD version over the ‘R’ version.. but.. it does help to know the difference. Either way, this is an astonishing lens which ever version you want to go for.

Pros –
Best low DOF lenes for the Fuji System
Cons –
APD version carries a price cost over the normal version
