A view towards Glasbury from Tack Wood in the the Brecon Beacons

The other day, we was invited to head down to the south coast of Wales for a personal engagement. As always, whenever we have the chance to go somewhere new, it is always a chance to pack up the Peli and head out to explore.

We looked at the map and planned out a lovely route though the Brecon Brecons stopping over night in Hay-on-Wye then going right though the center of the hills along to Swansea via Neath. This took us though the most amazing country side that Wales had to offer.
Anyone will know, when you are traveling with a photographer – any journey can turn into some epic adventure at any moment. The sunshine was amazing as was the light rain shower that gave us the most amazing sunset on the first night.

As for cameras on this trip, we packed up the Pentax K3, Fuji X-Pro, Fuji X-T1 and the D800.

Most of the images on here were shot with the D800 as I am just loving getting those crazy big, crazy detailed images with the range wider than any other camera on the market. Pushing cameras and tech to the edge is such a joy.  The amazing thing is how fast people like Pentax and Fuji are gathering ground.  The Pentax K-5 is really an amazing camera and the sensor in the the middle is truly amazing and seems very suited to shooting landscapes.  The sealing to the elements of the camera is wonderful also, as was battery life. Colour and tonal range is amazing. The Fuji’s are super interesting to me still, out on location shooting the big wide landscapes, the Nikon is still king for me, giving massive crop options, massive range and tone, but the Fuji cameras still are first into the bag and mostly, the first out the bag when looking to set up shots. The fast response and detail they pick up is a great way to decide if we are going to stop the car, set up the tripod and work the shot.  Having the Lee Filter Seven5 system and the 100mm system is great as this really lets me test out images before setting up time lapse shots or setting up the larger camera.

Interestingly, I guess many people, especially after editing, could not say which images are taken on which format cameras. On the website or the blog, there is just no way, anyone could say, Pentax, Fuji or Nikon.  More interestingly, even when printed or published, 90% of people could not still say which format or brand.  So, why do I carry different cameras ?
Not sure I can answer that one except I like cameras and I like tech and I like to try things, I like to see how they all work and this alone is one reason I like to get out and shoot. I like to play.  The combo of the Nikon and the Fuji cameras is still a most wonderful combination, but Pentax are always very close behind, I wonder if the Pentax 645z can replace the D800 though.

One thing is for sure after this trip – Fuji are still the company making the most fun, multi-use cameras on the market. I have the luxury of playing with and using pretty much all the cameras on the market today, and I still love Fuji, but, maybe the only thing has changed is the fact that I am using the X-T1 more than the X-Pro
