Every so often we love to put on some workshops, we keep them more about learning than just about portfolio building days. On our workshops you can expect to be asking questions, be asked questions and work on creating images. We hope to raise the questions for you to leave and answer on your own time. Most photographers do best when the self learning kicks in, so we aim to fuel that process as well as guide and inspire.

During the 2 part workshop with Valentina Feula we looked at the styling and photographic ethic of Helmut Newton and Bob Carlos Clarke. We pulled apart the idea of creating story and looked into creating images with a confident style. The aim of this is to understand that if you want your models to look confident, you have to be a factor in this too.

‘Photographing a person is much like dance or partnership. If you want your images to look confident, we must put this into the images, both the photographer and model’
Working in small groups really helped us work as a team. while one person was shooting we all helped as assistants to refine the images. Communication with the model (subjects) is vital to get your desired images. Trust does play a big part in this, working with your model and keeping the confidence high is super key. We worked on some ideas and techniques that allow you to forget the camera is even in the room. Shooting and keeping in constant comfortable communication is something I really like to encourage.

The stunning makeup was done for us buy the very talented Zaneta Swaitlowska

During the shoot – we started with some demo images from myself and Valentina.
They are mostly shot with a single light with a snoot added for some finer lighting details. The Lee Filter system was used on three different focal length lenses for these images.
Sigma 35mm f1.4
Sigma 105mm
Nikon 180mm
We used a tethered shooting system using Tethertools, D800 and DigiCam Control. The Filters were used to create the shadow and contrast in the images.

If you want to look at the process technique for these images, you can watch the video below. It is a super simple process using Photoshop and the Gradient Map.
